Many people are convinced that civilization as we know it will collapse or, at best, experience a prolonged interruption. Very few of those people are actually planning for it and even less are preparing for it in advance.
In a SHTF event there will be more competition and lawlessness. Our underlying goal in a SHTF scenario is ultimately to stay alive and live without exposure to risks. As much preparation as many of us have made, in the altered world of a SHTF crisis, there will be many dangers that lurk; and some of them will be inadvertently from our own doing.
Within the first 24 hours, you should be able to tell how bad the situation is and how quickly it will deteriorate. This will allow you to make more concrete, long-term plans to get yourself and your loved ones to safety so you can survive the event that has brought society to its knees. Just remember to keep your cool, keep your head clear and focused, and be as thorough as possible with your assessment of the situation. Then you and your family will have the best possible chance of survival.
The Four Laws of Survival
In a survival scenario all bets are off and the following laws will keep you alive. These laws are rigid, but necessary. Harsh, but true. Keep your cards close and always have a plan.
Law 1: The Shelter
You need to check to make sure your home is secured enough for you to be safe. Things like sliding doors are particularly vulnerable to intruders as is unlocked windows and doors. Make sure your shelter is as safe as it can be.
Also, try to keep items out of the way to keep a clear line of vision around your home, if possible. Secure garages and make sure it will be hard for intruders to break into.
Lastly, keep your prepping supplies in an area where you can get to it easily. If you have your prepping items in an area that could be completely closed off such as a detached garage or a climate controlled storage shed, move them quickly inside if possible.
Law 2: Water Storage
During a disaster, you will need to have an abundance of water. You cannot rely on your local grocery stores or your municipality for water during a disaster. Water is usually the first item that is sold out during a disaster as most people only have a basic 48-72 hour supply of water. You need to take precautions and make sure that your family has a generous supply of water and create a plan detailing where to find other sources of water should you run out.
Law 3: Storing Food
Preppers are notorious for their food storage because it’s one of the biggest and most important concerns when the SHTF. Of course, we want to feed our families.
But I added this because a lot of preppers like myself forget to rotate my food out so it becomes expired or my wife needs something while cooking dinner and I give it to her out of my stockpile instead of driving to the store when I’m tired. (Come on guys, i know we’ve all probably done it!)
Remember to replenish what you have taken from your food storage, Keep up with expiration dates. Rotate them out. Do an inventory of your food to see what you are lacking.
Law 4: Being Ready to Bug Out
Many preppers agree that being in an urban area when society goes south is not ideal. For those who have the desire and resources to secure a bug out location, there are a lot of things to consider.
After all, the reason to have a bug out location is to get away from the chaos and potential danger a SHTF situation can generate.
The simplest way to make life easier if and when you bug out is to have a go bag. It contains necessary tools and materials to help you get through 3 days of wilderness survival. Try to prepare a bug out bag for each member of the family. Then you can rest easy knowing you’re prepared for emergencies.
We all need to cultivate and grow our skills, and sometimes that skill is waking down a busy street like a grey man. You and only you can create a realistic survival strategy for your needs. It’s fun to imagine ourselves with backpack and prybar in hand parkouring around city rooftops like some lone survivor ninja, or busting through roadblocks in a vehicle right out of a movie, gatling gun and all…. but that’s not a plan, it’s fantasy.
